Eye Care Outcomes
When students have completed this unit in conjunction with the 3VI
CD-ROM they will be able to:
Explain some common situations in which eyes are at risk
Demonstrate some eye care strategies
Teacher’s Eye Care Guidelines
The following list is not exhaustive. It addresses some common hazardous
situations.
Always wear a hat and dark glasses in the sun. Ultra-violet light is
linked to the formation of cataracts
Stay in shaded areas as much as possible when the sun is at its hottest,
between 10am and 4pm
Wear tinted glasses in the snow
Check dark glasses before you buy them to see that they meet the
Australian Standard 1067. (toy sunnies don’t work)
Think about bringing a spare pair of glasses or contact lenses to sporting
activities, in case a lens gets dislodged
Think about wearing glasses or safety goggles for dangerous activities
eg some ball games, welding, woodwork, riding motorcycle
Don’t look at the sun, especially during an eclipse
Don’t throw objects, especially sharp objects (eg stones)
If you get something in your eye, wash it out with clean cold water
from a running tap; keep washing for at least 10 minutes
Ask your parents or teachers about getting your eyes checked if you
notice you’re having problems seeing, or if your eyes are hurting.
Your eyes should be approximately 35-50 centimetres from the computer
screen
Don’t try to use a computer in front of a window or a source of
bright light
If you’re working or playing on the computer take a break –
glance away from the screen for a few seconds every few minutes.

They brainstorm common hazards to eyes. For each hazard they try to
come up with a workable ‘Eye Care’ guideline. The groups
come together to categorise and rank their hazards and their strategies
and develop an class Eye Care checklist. Each group works on a poster
involving artwork, layout, and a slogan to publicise that guideline.
