Low Vision Centre (LVC)

To attend the LVC a recent eye report is needed and a referral from either an optometrist or ophthalmologist. Children and their parents/carers meet with a counsellor to discuss their eye condition, any problems they are having, and what they would like to be able to achieve from their visit.

They then receive a low vision functional assessment from an optometrist, who examines their level of vision and assesses their suitability for low vision products.

Low vision products, such as magnifiers, that the optometrist believes would provide the greatest benefit can be prescribed and are able to be trialled for a month and then purchased or returned. A range of other assistive equipment is also available for demonstration and sale.

Individuals then meet with an ophthalmologist, who is able to confirm their eye condition and discuss the implications of the condition.

Orthoptic counselling is also available to maximise the use of existing vision. This may include advice on lighting and appropriate seating arrangements in a classroom. Eccentric viewing may be helpful to assist to make the best use of peripheral vision.

This procedure is followed to maximise the benefits available for children when at home or at school.
